To most Indians Namibia is the country that has helped Cheetah’s
introduction in the Indian landscape. In reality Namibia is much more, it
is a geographical and zoological wonder. Namib desert, the oldest
desert on earth, runs along the Atlantic Ocean on the country’s western
coast and at the same time it has one of the world’s largest canyons,
Fish River Canyon bordering vast deserts with giant dunes. It is a
country of extremes. The Etosha National Park boasts a wide range of
animals and a 4800 sq km of salt pan that is visible even from satellites.
Surprisingly, inspite of its arid landscape it has all the Big 5 animals
other than the cape buffalo along with the highest population of cheetah.
The Himba tribe known the world over for their red skin inhabit in the
north of Namibia while the bush man, famous for the English Film ‘ God
must be crazy’ live in the Namib desert. Incidentally, with just 3 persons
per square kilometer Namibia is the second least densely populated
country in the world.
